Beachfront land to be auctioned on South Padre
Thousands of acres are among the last commercial property available on the island
Associated Press
McALLEN - A land auction this week at South Padre Island will include thousands of acres of beachfront property along the Gulf of Mexico.
A Houston businessman is selling more than 2,300 acres in Friday's auction at the island's Sheraton Hotel.
Dawson Sterling, a former insurance executive and property owner, said he hopes developers will bid on the eight tracts, ranging in size from 186 to 466 acres, which extend south from the Willacy-Cameron county line for about one mile.
Sterling said the property, to be auctioned by the National Auction Group of Gadsden, Ala., represents some of the last remaining commercial land available on the barrier island, a popular tourist destination.
Part of the same barrier island received national attention as an alternative site for bombing exercises the U.S. military now performs on Vieques, Puerto Rico. But environmentalists quickly geared up to fight the idea they said threatened the world's largest undeveloped barrier island as well as the shallow, hypersaline inland bay it protects.
The bay, the Laguna Madre, is considered a nursery to many marine species, some of which are considered threatened. The military has since scrapped the idea.
Three of the tracts to be sold are located along the Laguna Madre while the remaining five face the Gulf of Mexico.
